Tweeting from Iran

The issue of media, especially Western, coverage of the elections and the protests in Iran is slowly becoming a controversial one. The claim is that the so-called “Twitter Revolution” was bit exaggerated and biased, if not misleading. It portrayed the situation in a simplistic way: The good old “good vs. evil” story.

Some Iranians – and even Arabs – say that the coverage did not highlight bloggers and Twitter users that are pro-government, but rather emphasized the Tweets and videos of the protest of the opposition. That is why some jumped on the conspiracy theory that the West is behind the protests or at least encouraging them. And man do they love conspiracy theories in the Middle East!!

"I just feel the need for a reliable source in this world of rumours. I saw that some people are using this opportunity to mislead non-Iranians. There are many fake Twitter accounts right now which just make everything so twisted and untrue," said Shahrazad, a blogger and Twitter user, in an interview with Al Jazeera.

And here is another interesting interview on BBC: "I voted for Ahmadinejad."
